GETTING LEARNERS PERMIT

To obtain California Learners Permit you must:

Have completed Drivers Education and be at least 15 ½ years old

We offer an online drivers education course for all California high school students. You can register for Driver's Education and login to complete the self-paced program. Complete it at one time or in multiple sessions. $24.99 fee includes the entire program and Official DMV certificate. Once you are done with the course, official DMV certificate will be mailed to you in approximately 2 business days. 

(If you are over 17 ½ but under 18 years of age, you may get your permit without the driver education and driver training certificates. However, you will not be able to take the driving test until you turn 18.)

Make a field office visit appointment

We recommend you make an appointment to visit a field office for faster service. You can make an appointment in three ways.

Fill out DMV application (DL44) online. 

Click here to fill out an online DL44 application. Minors must have their applications signed by their parent(s) or legal guardian(s). If both parents/guardians have joint custody, both must sign. You can also obtain your parent(s) or guardian(s) signature(s) on the application electronically.

Present an acceptable birth data/legal presence document and provide Social Security Number

Provide two (2) California residency documents when applying for a REAL ID Compliant DL/ID card. You must provide one (1) form of acceptable residency when applying for an original California driver license. Click here for list of residency documents.

*If you are applying for a DL in compliance with AB 60, you are only required to provide one (1) residency document.

Pay a $38 application fee

DMV accepts payment in Cash, ATM/Debit card, cashier's check or money order made payable to DMV. This fee entitles you to three exams of any type within the 12 month period and pays for both your provisional instruction permit and your drivers license. If all requirements are not met within the 12 month period, the application becomes void and all steps must be completed again.

Pass the Drivers Permit Test

There are 46 questions on the test. A passing score is at least 38 correct answers. You have 3 chances to pass the test. If you fail, you must wait 7 days before taking it again. We provide practice written test questions here. Study them before you go for your permit test.

TEEN DRIVERS TRAINING (BEHIND THE WHEEL TRAINING)

6 HOURS OF BEHIND-THE-WHEEL TRAINING

Drivers Training is a mandatory requirment for teens looking to earn their driver license before the age of 18. It is a way to learn the rules and regulations of our streets and highways so that they too can easily obtain a license to drive in California. Drivers training is many times refered to as "behind the wheel" training because once you have studied and pass the rules of the road examination on paper (Drivers Ed and Permit test) your next step is to put your knowlege into practice.

Drivers training helps you do just that. YOU get behind the wheel. It consist of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training. The student completes this course in 3 sessions of 2 hours. Our patient, understanding and experienced instructors will be right next to you to help you gain the confidence and knowledge you need to pass the California drivers test, and more importantly help you learn the skills to be a safe driver. At the end or your drivers training program you will feel confident, secure, and safe behind the wheel of a car. 

Free home, school or work pick-up and drop-off service is included, which offers an extra convenience for parents who find it difficult to take students to their driving lessons. The student is taught safety and defensive driving techniques. 

All our instructors are licensed by the DMV. We have met all of the requirements for licensing by State of California including inspections of the vehicles, bonding and insurance.

ITEMS NEEDED FOR THE ROAD TEST

Once you have completed drivers education course, obtained your learners permit and have taken 6 hours of behind the wheel training, you will be well prepared to take your California drivers road test.

Be at least 16 years old and make a behind the wheel drive test appointment

Have held an Instruction Permit for at least 6 months from issued date shown on permit

Parents AND Licensed Driving Instructor's signature on Permit

Our instructor will sign your permit on the first day of behind-the-wheel training. Also, your Parent(s) or guardian(s) must sign on your instruction permit certifying that you have completed 50 hours of supervised driving practice (10 hours must be night driving)

Have completed and provide a Certificate for : 
- Drivers Education 
- Drivers Training (Behind the Wheel)

Pink Drivers Education certificate and Yellow Drivers Training Completion Certificate is needed for your drive test.

Must be accompanied by a California Licensed Driver 25 years or older

A parent, guardian, or adult 25 years of age or older, who has a valid California drivers license, must accompany with you

Registration Card and Proof of Insurance for the Vehicle used for testing

Be ready to locate the following in your vehicle:

• Headlights
• Windshield wipers
• Defroster
• Emergency flashers
• Parking brake

Pass the Drive Test

After you pass your driving test you will be issued an interim license valid for 90 days until you receive your new photo license in the mail. Check your address before you leave DMV and tell the DMV representative if you have moved or if your address is incorrect. If you have not received your license after 60 days, call 1-800-777-0133 to check on the status.

If you fail your driving test, you must wait 2 weeks before you can take the test again. There is $8 retest fee. You have 3 chances to pass.

PROVISIONAL DRIVER LICENSE RESTRICTIONS 

Provisional Driving Restrictions during the first year

You must be accompanied and supervised by a licensed parent, guardian or other licensed driver 25 years old or older or a licensed or certified driving instructor when you:

          · Transport passengers under 20 years of age at any time for the first twelve months. 

          · Drive between 11 pm and 5 am for the first twelve months.

When you turn 18 years of age, the provisional part of your license ends. You may continue to drive as an adult using your photo license, which will expire on your 5th birthday after the date you applied.
